Sep. 16th, 2003 11:24 pmI hate flying. Bleah.
Nothing but sinus headaches both ways. My mum said I looked as though I'd been beaten up. Nasty. Hard time breathing; couldn't get used to the whole altitude/air difference between Winnipeg and Ontario. I should have told people I had SARS. That would have been fun.
Still, it was neat to meet family and hear stories about my grand-dad, who was only eighteen when he left Ireland. My mother didn't know him that well, so it must have been wonderful for her to learn more. Found out my great-grandmother was Welsh, which I didn't know. Met a gang of second cousins, and their children, who looked vaguely familiar--I couldn't figure out why, until I realized I'd seen some of those features in the mirror before. Weird feeling, that. I've always been without much family, adrift here in the New World.
A couple of them even said they'd like to visit us; one of the younger second cousins is interested in Canadian history, and wants to come see the historic site where I work summers. I think I'd like that. And my mum and I are hoping to go to Ireland next year to meet some of her dad's family that are still living there.
Neat stuff.
Still hate flying though.
