Feb. 27th, 2005 12:45 amSo I just found out tonight that Marvin Francis, a brilliant local Indigenous poet/dramatist and a friend of mine from school, passed away in January. Some of you Canadians might remember him as the Manitoba contestant in the CBC Poetry Face-Off. The Freedom to Read celebration at McNally Robinson this weekend is dedicated to his memory--we went there tonight, which was how I heard the sad news.
Marvin was a really sweet guy. He was one of those people who is so easy to talk to, and he made an effort to get to know me in my first days at the U of M. I was really uncomfortable in the graduate program; I started in the middle of the school year, and I didn't know anyone. Marvin was very kind to me, never failed to make me laugh, and I was saddened to see him cut down like this. I still feel a bit stunned; it hasn't really sunk in yet, I guess.
I had intended to dedicate this space to telling you all about Marvin's creative endeavours, but right now my thoughts are dwelling more on the person he was. So I think I'll just end it there.
