Okay, so. I would like to make an iPod friendly video of an episode of "Futurama" currently stored on my computer.

QuickTime Pro takes 40 minutes to produce an iPod friendly video with no sound.
Windows Movie Maker takes 15 minutes to produce a poor-quality, non-iPod-compatible nightmare.
Videora takes 20 minutes to produce an iPod friendly video with no sound.

Before I download any more software, I want a guarantee that it will turn mpegs into iPod-compatible mp4s with sound.

It sounds to me like the source file is to blame, frankly. What format is that file in? Do you have the source video?

It's a .dvr file (I think?) recorded in Win Media Player's TV function--basically, it's taped off digital cable. But I had the same result with my test video, and a Danger Mouse cartoon in .mpg format.

Ah-hah. Well, I can tell you that the WMP file probably won't work with the iPod. QuickTime might play it, but the iPod is rather more specific in what kind of thing it'll play. The dropped-out sound is a mystery, though. I'm sure if you go to the Apple support forums (where I pointed you before), you can find out more info - just search for something like, "no sound iPod video" and you'll be sure to find something. It really is just a matter of getting the right source and the right conversion software. You have the latest version of QuickTime (7), yes?

Yes, and I upgraded to Pro, for all the good it did me.

Thanks for your help. Despite all the bitching, I really am quite happy with my iPod video. :)

Now, here's another one for you... what case do think is best?

Does it work well? (I have only had my iPod for 24 hours and it is already scratched...)

Yeah, iPods are delicate objets d'art.I got mine the very same time as I got the iPod, and I have no complaints. It's a good case. My old iPod had a case from booq, which served very well, but that one went with it (since it had the holes for the row of buttons).

In the above I meant Media Center, not Media player. iSuck.
